The rediscovery of Haydn’s original manuscript at the Austrian National Library in 1954 ended any doubts about Haydn’s authorship of the piece. For a time, some maintained that the D major Cello Concerto had actually been composed by Kraft rather than Haydn. This misinformation proved hard to eradicate, and it was repeated in other publications so often that it came to overshadow the truth, although a few voices continued to argue that Haydn’s Cello Concerto really was by Haydn after all.

Cello Concertos No. 1 in C and No. 2 in D by Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields conducted by Sir Neville Marriner (1924-2016) with Lynn Harrell (1944-2020), cello. Haydn's D major cello concerto is dated 1783, approximately twenty years after his C major cello concerto. It is thought to have been written for Anton Kraft, a virtuoso cellist in Haydn's orchestra at Esterházy, and to have been carefully tailored to show off that performer's technical skills. THE BACKSTORY Franz Joseph Haydn’s outpouring of music during his three decades as musical director for the rich and powerful Esterházy princes is breathtaking, encompassing long lists of symphonies, chamber pieces, and operas. Concertos were also well Haydn composed his Cello Concerto No. 2 around 1783 in Esterhazy, although at one point the piece was attributed to Anton Kraft, a renowned cellist in Haydn’s time. The rediscovery of Haydn’s original manuscript at the Austrian National Library in 1954 ended any doubts about Haydn’s authorship of the piece.
